New Holland makes donation to American Red Cross during Dakotafest Dakotafest enthusiasts may have flocked to Mitchell Thursday in search of South Dakota producers, food vendors and politicians, but the American Red Cross decided it, too, would join the farm festivities – and parked its ERV right, smack next to the tractors and construction equipment.
The Red Cross’s ERV – Emergency Response Vehicle – was brought to Mitchell’s Dakotafest by Leonard Dankey and Dale Bosch, Red Cross volunteers from Sioux Falls. The large emergency vehicle was parked at the New Holland booth, with local Red Cross volunteers, Doug Greenway, Trish Schaefers, Nancy Nedved and Mari Olson, giving out free lemonade to the New Holland Super Boom Road Show participants. New Holland Construction Equipment invited the local chapter, American Red Cross Dakota Plains Chapter, to attend its road show and talk to participants about Red Cross volunteer opportunities, and following the competition, New Holland donated $500 to the local chapter. “This is a wonderful donation and surprise,” said Schaefers, chairman of the local Red Cross board. “We were informed about a week ago that New Holland was going to make this generous gift and were pretty excited about it.” Schaefers attended the entire New Holland Super Boom Road Show competition, cheering on several men as they took a skid steer loader through an obstacle course. “It was especially fun because I ended up knowing several of the guys who competed,” she said. “It was a very nice event and we couldn’t be more grateful for New Holland’s support for the Red Cross cause.” The American Red Cross Dakota Plains Chapter covers seven counties, including Davison, Hanson, Aurora, Brule, Douglas, Hutchinson and Sanborn counties, and provides services in CPR, AED and First Aid training; lifeguarding; workplace safety; and babysitting and swimming instructions. In the event of a disaster, the American Red Cross provides clothing, food, temporary shelter, and much more. Last year the local chapter responded to 15 local disasters, serving 18 families of single-family fires or explosions. The Red Cross is capable of providing classes and these services because of everyday people who volunteer their time and talent.
